Pentagon, World's Biggest Fossil Fuel User, Shops for Biofuels

Bloomberg -- Gevo Inc. (GEVO), Syntroleum Corp. and Solazyme Inc. (SZYM) may be among a “small set” of biofuel producers vying for supply contracts from the U.S. Defense Department, the world’s largest consumer of fossil fuels, analysts said.

The agency is preparing to announce about five initial grants to companies making fuels from renewable materials to power jet fighters, battleships and other vehicles. The decision, which according to application documents is due “on or about” today, may come Oct. 22, Laura Ortiz, the program’s agreements negotiator, said in an Oct. 17 interview.

The military bought about 130 million barrels of jet fuel, diesel and other petroleum products in fiscal 2011, and is seeking to replace as much as half with renewable biofuels. Winning one of the small initial grants

If the DOD is looking for more fossil fuels, then it's time to drill more of our oil here TODAY.

Van_Halen: They shop for biofuels are Tax Payer expense! They need to buy the cheapest fuel no matter if its fossil or not!

During a war, that may not be an option if alternatives to fossil fuels are not developed.

In every battle of modern warfare, the rate-limiting step/bottleneck has always been the fuel and getting it to the front lines. If US and her troops are being blocked from getting oil, the US will loose the battle. If these alternatives are developed, the battle could still be fought and won.

So if short term costs are of more concern for you then long term national security, you have my pity.

Hey, the politically connected corporation has to get a return doesn't it? Otherwise why contribute all that dough to political campaigns?

Of course all these biofuels will cost an arm and a leg, but why should they care? It's other people's money! Whee!

It will be near impossible to replace 50% of our petroleum products with renewable sources in one year! This is good for research but doesn't need to be so fast or drastic. This is a big waste of our money in my opinion doing it this way - except President Obama may only have one year left - which is probably why it is being done this way! This is dumb and idiotic!

It would be great if the military would be able to change over to biofuels as long as a couple things were to happen - (1) the price was competitive with fossil fuels and (2) when the military is in the field, it was easily accessible. In the Middle East, they're having enough trouble getting fossil fuels for their vehicles, how much harder (and dangerous)would transporting biofuels be.

Many of our military personnel in the Iraq and Afgan wars died solely to protect and/or ship the needed fuel for our vehicles while in hostile territory. That needs to change. The military needs to find ways to fuel their vehicles using resources local to their activity.

Grants, you mean my hard earned taxpayer money, I mean Bernanke's printed money going to more research.
Have a dang X-prize contest between creative, motivated, innovative groups who get minimal seed money. The more private involvement, the better.
The results will astound us all
and we won't see them in bankruptcy court after wasting $500 million.

MAC48 has the military concern pegged. The supply lines are very long, and the right biofuels (not just Ethanol alcohol, and not fryer oil either, but bio-sourcing of actual gasoline and diesel and aviation fuel 'no modification required' drop-ins) go a long way to reducing strategic dependence.

Whether you get gasoline (octane) from catalyzing crude oil or a near chemical equivalent like butanol from catalyzing other materials doesn't really matter, as long as you can use the gasoline/butanol/other compound just like gasoline.

As a very large customer, the contracts can create real world economies of scale immediately.

Not only do we already spend more on military spending than the rest of the World spends, but Romney will spend even more still, while at the same time cutting taxes and reducing the deficit. Is this magic or what?

Idiots! Government is spending sacred tax payer money. It should be done as efficiently as possible. The free market is the one to choose the winners and losers in Biofuels.
