Government lowers 2009 gasoline price forecast to $2.37 a ga

Houston Chronicle -- WASHINGTON — Prices at the gasoline pump will average $2.37 a gallon for regular next year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicted today. But the slowing economy and volatile energy markets are making price forecasting a tough assignment. Just a month ago, the agency predicted regular would average $3.56 a gallon next year.

Buck twenty in just a few short months. How quickly these officials change their minds. And when OPEC cuts production, what then?

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As stated previously, they said we would be lucky if gas went down to $3.30 by the end of the year. And what else can they predict? Not much!

The oil companies need to fire all of the speculators & predictors! They are the reason we are in this mess! Just set the prices as they sell the gas - not anticipate what they might sell! We will not be bullied into paying more just to pad their pockets!

Unfortunately they do have to predict in advance for these sorts of things. Sadly, we also let too many government agencies get away with too many cost overruns, so it doesn't matter if they're wildly incorrect.

The government is as good in their prediction of the price of gas and the weathermen can predict the weather.

I think it is silly for us to talk about gas prices "falling." They are always going to go up until we get serious about alternative fuels. Sure, there will be times when they drop, but the trend over time is always going to be heading up.

Lowering an estimate means exactly what? Like the government has a clue what the combined impact of OPEC, the economic woes of the world, and what form the recovery takes on the price of a gallon of gasoline a year from now? Interested in buying an ocean front property in Arizona - oh yeah, that might happen...

My prediction is that in 2009 gas prices will be somewhere between free and $1000/gal. Now that I'm as qualified to be a Gov't forecaster, what do I win?

I've found myself driving at 75mph (speed limit), in stead of 65 like I used to drive back when the price were high, and yet, I was passed by several trucks. Don't know how long can we keep gas price at this level before it goes up again :(
