Giving old batteries a new lease of life

Wild Singapore News -- Lester Kok Straights Times, 4 Sep 10;
...
Battizer, which started in March, used the same technology to develop a quick charger for electric vehicles (Evs). It then took its vehicle charger to FTD Technology, the local distributor of India-made Ampere electric scooters. In the test, the scooters' batteries were charged fully in just one hour, a fraction of the normal four to eight hours ... . ... . The charging time is shortened, the battery remains cool while charging and the e-scooter's performance is much better than before,....
... this quick-charging innovation is critical for EVs, especially in countries like India and Indonesia, where electrical supply can be disrupted at any time.

Well call me some people. These Pure Energy recyclable alkaline batteries have been around for years. Despite the warning in the instructions, I've put non-rechargeable alkalines with a bit of life left into mine, and they do accept one or two partial charges allowing a little more usage. So I believe their claims better technology can do a better job of this.

They claim they recharge normal alkaline batteries. Some people will believe anything.

"Batteries cause untold environmental damage when the metals are mined and smelted, and pose a second risk when they are disposed of. It's really no better than oil in that regard. "

You should look up "recycling" in the dictionary. Hint: you can't recycle oil that's been burned.

From the story:
"In the test, the scooters' batteries were charged fully in just one hour, a fraction of the normal four to eight hours taken with the normal charger. "
Speeding up charging time 4 to 8 times is great. It also says, with this charger the battery size could be increased to give more range with the original charging time.
Sized right, this could really help EVs.

Looks promising if the quick-charger proves its worth with EVs and plug in hybrids. A key question is how long will the quick-charger take to recharge an EV or plug in hybrid battery pack. One hour to recharge a scooter battery is fine but the battery pack in an EV or plug in hybrid is a much tougher test.

Hope this proves to be effective since it would help solve one of the major impracticalities of using EVs.

grandpadon: "All batteries should be quick charge and quit throwing them away"

And all cars should be Mercedes or Lexus, too.

So this charger charges alkaline and dry-cell batteries? That's cool.

What I find interesting is that there is no description of how this new technological breakthrough works. Why should I believe something simply because someone says it true. Publish the facts (while keeping your trade secrets and patents protected) so I have a better understanding and may believe the "sales pitch."

It is a known fact that any attempt to recharge alkaline batteries is dangerous and could result in an explosion. I have heard of products that claim to be able to recharge alkalines before, but I've yet to see one become a common household goods.

I'm going to wait and see what comes out of this one.

Any enviro-weenie who thinks electric is the answer has clearly not done his or her enviro-research. Batteries cause untold environmental damage when the metals are mined and smelted, and pose a second risk when they are disposed of. It's really no better than oil in that regard.

Batteries will continue to be the deterrent for a viable electric car. Batteries are too heavy, limited energy storage and slow to charge (compared to filling a tank with gas).

Most people in India and Indonesia couldn't afford to buy hybrid/electric cars. Import Taxes are too high.

Why newer technology in India and Indonesia than in the USA? Wild Singapore News is on a roll; Scooters surely have a much smaller battery than a car.

From a company designing chargers for AA batteries for third world countries comes a quick charger for EVs.

And it says it can extend their serviceable life too.
