Gas drilling studies funded by nonprofits

Tennessean / Associated Press -- Industry officials say charity work biased; proponents argue need

Citizens groups and nonprofits around the nation are asking questions about environmental and health impacts of natural gas hydraulic fracturing, and Pennsylvania charities are funding much of the debate, here and in other states.

Foundations from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh have provided more than $19 million for gas-drilling-related grants since 2009, according to an Associated Press review of charity data. The money has paid for scientific studies, films, radio programs, websites and even trout fishing groups that monitor water quality.

The recipients of Heinz grants have a wide range of views. Some take no official position or just want better oversight, while others are clearly opposed to drilling.

For example, Earth

It would be nice if all studies were required to disclose who provided the funding for the study. It would also be nice if all study funders had to disclose from whom the funding was initially received if the funding entity is not a private person. This would help readers and users of any study in their determination of the validity a study.

“. . . protests from some in the gas drilling industry, who claim there’s bias in the campaigns.”

And there is no bias in ‘studies’ funded by the oil and gas industry? Gimme a break.

Both sides have obvious opposing views with some variability among the organizations being privately funded to perform the studies. There is some validity to the Shale coalition, claiming the private funding is mostly given to groups naturally opposed to shale oil development due to their concerns. If you criticize the oil co. of bias then you have to consider Environmental concern groups of possible bias also.

The interpretation of data is frequently skewed by personal bias of the observer. All the General public can do is try to weigh the majority of the data from the most unbiased reliable sources, then try & make a correct judgement. You will find the most extensive supposed unbiased scientific studies come to one conclusion only to be reversed 10 or 20 yrs later with other similarly valid studies. Anyone with some age & knowledge can verify this fact.

Had you bothered to actually read and comprehend the article you might have seen this snippet "The foundation, which is not affiliated with the company of the same name,"

And for those posting about follow the money and they have an agenda, how about something concrete to say instead of innuendo? Other than trying to protect people, what is it you think they have to gain here? It is more than obvious what Marcellus Shale Coalition has to gain.

I think I agree that they shouldn't take sides, they should just want good oversight of the process and permits. It's hard to say whether hydraulic fracturing is the cause, since the gas is ususally far beneath the water table. I'd be more inclined to believe the well casing failed, rather than the gas and water were mixing. Oh, and hydrualic fracturing has been used for over 50 years to stimulate oil and gas wells. If it was such a problem, why didn't we hear about it before?

It's great that non profits are getting involved. To bad the government does'nt think research into possible risks is important.
