nogoatz: problem is that many older drivers won't give up independence and even if required to take tests, may drive w/out license (which will be even worse b/c they may not carry insurance at that point either).

A driving skills test starting at age 60 should be mandatory, along with yearly or bi yearly eye tests. If you are still able to drive safely, then the test wil be of little consequence. But, if you are have impaired functions and are unable to drive safely, then the testing may save innocent lives.

on my way home I saw a car shift lanes without concern for the car next to them. good thing the other young person had fast reactions to avoid a hit. looking back at the driver, was a silver haired older person, never mind the sex of the person. just a resent example.

Older drivers are as safe as any other, if not more so due to years of experience.
SELF PRESERVATION kicks in when they realize they are not as adept and stop driving voluntarily. Common sense prevails.
Those folks who become impaired and want to continue driving have family to intercede.
Keep the government out of this.
Too many unelected bureaucrats telling us what to do.

The good part about living in a small town, (under 1000,) is you know the all drivers and how they drive, what stop sign they drive through,where they go, and etc. so you can stay out of the way.

Dangerous drivers of all ages should be tested every two years. Maybe this way, if they can't pass the driving test, they'll get them pulled off of the road. Of course, they should tighten up the requirements too.

I wrote a lengthy draft "guidelines" on this topic yesterday and received a nice notification from trugasCA. I intend on polishing the document and sending it to my state’s public safety (DMV), my governor, state senators and congressmen/women, and the USDOT Inspector General’s office, urging them to take as minimum, the idea, state driving permit applications and the applicant’s skills, knowledge, and abilities be tested at appropriate chronological or health issue times.
I tend to lean toward common-sense, safety of all citizens, drivers or not, [read-children] the Constitutional Rights, and wish to remind everyone from 14-114, driving a motorized vehicle in our society is a PRIVILEGE and is not guaranteed by any Federal or State Law. Someday, I too, will either know it’s time (my doctor will give me a clue) to turn over the keys and buy a horse,*smile* and/or enjoy my monthly, less expensive taxi rides or if the DMV’s tests tell me it is time……I don’t want to be the cause of a person’s injury or death because I wasn’t able to properly operate my vehicle; car, truck, boat, motorcycle, snowmobile, skidoo, sailboat, jetboat.
Def: DUI - driving under influence drugs or alcohol. BUI - boating under influence drugs or alcohol. TWS - Texting while Stupid. DWOS - Driving without seatbelts. DWOCCS - Driving without children's car seats.
As a human-being, I dislike change as much as anyone else, but change in our lives (even for gas prices) will happen no matter how much we cross our fingers, pray to a Deity, write Santa Claus a letter, or stroke a dismembered rabbit’s foot…
If you have any constructive ideas, principles, or concepts you wish me to consider or include, your state’s leadership will be included (on my dime) and your real name will be listed as a co-author, if you wish it so.

I agree changes need to be implemented to the regular standard driver’s permit-with no endorsements; (motorcycle, Class A etc., addressed by separate testing regulatory laws/periods.)

15 & 16 (AFTER FIRST YEAR of LEARNERS PERMIT) may drive until 10:00 P.M - two hours later if work related/school requested by work/school supervisor on organization’s letterhead, approved by parent(s) or guardian, notarized, and presented to Drivers License Dept (DMV) for (EH) extended hours (10:00-12:00P.M.) 12:00PM, RESTRICTED ENDORSEMENT CODE (EH).
17-21: Drivers Permit
Physically show-up for renewal every 2 years (e.g. 17-19-21), -until 21st birthday month.
Computer-generated Random-selected drug test.
Drug test: blood, urine or both if felony DUI/BUI is on record with-in 10 years or permit application, dated with-in 15 days of permit application..
At least TEN random multiple-choice/fill-in-the blank (For Official DMV Use Only) versions of the tests will be prepared within DMV Directorate.

This statement (or legal equivalent) must be placed on the applicant’s request for DMV Issued Drivers Permit for ALL Permit Classes.
Doctors routine medical certifying physical/mental abilities, permit dated within 30 days of permit application,

Well state/civil governments are mandated to keep civilians as save as possible, road work, fire & police dept. More people are killed in USA each year by vehicle accidents than all the Americans killed during the whole Vietnam Conflict. HMMM and we had bullets. Seat belts, crumple zones and air backs decrease injuries cause be error or undereducated drivers. Road construction has helped, more sand barrels around crash points, ruffled noise makers on the edge of the roadway to wake up drivers. Create the state Director job (wow 50 jobs), Director uses a team of oh say 10 to qualify and recertify each counties INSPECTION STATIONS (perhaps 1 inspection station to each 1500 registered vehicles in the county) a gas station or auto mechanic shop qualified to do the minimum vehicle safety check…lights, horn, wipers, washer, windshield in one piece. Tires brakes, lights, turn signals, horn, seatbelts, child safety seats. Alignment etc. Okay so you have 1 State Director, 1 Assistant state director in each county/region and say 10 inspection stations in each county. It would cost $15.00 for each vehicle inspection; divided three ways…$5 per inspection at the station, $5 for county payroll and inspection/certification, and $5.00 to the State for Strategic issues such as paying off road/bridge bonds, paying the salary of the new inspection safety office and 3 or 4 employees. Now for the customer experience…first they have to visit a doctor, either on their existing health plan or local health dept. They pay say $20 deductible for a checkup just as kids get when they want to play sports. Doctor’s office makes jobs/money. DMV need to hire an eye and hearing technician to run the on-site machines. 2 new jobs. Health labs which run the random and required drug screenings hire a few more employees. Look-up queuing-theory and your normal today DMV will possible be able to (OWG) speed things up for the request state permit at perhaps a 10-15% cost increase. Please still can come to DMV at anytime to request a permit, if they qualify, they can re-new on line at a decreased price. If people are found deficient during their 30-minurte test or fail the written test..no one died…they are allowed more time to reapply for a 1-year learners permit to study and improve their multi-skills required a aiming a 2-3 ton vehicle down the road… AT YOU OR ME and our families. The bottom line of this is driving a vehicle IS NOT A RIGHT…it is a qualified privilege. I’m willing to allow more people jobs and equitable salary, to keep our state citizen’s safer and me safer from not needing to go to a funeral home, or best case…meet with their insurance agent…we get only ONE spin around this lifetime…I want to grow very very very old. And when I can’t pass the tests anymore…hallelujah, I get to hire a taxi and sit in the right rear seat and ride as royalty…as long as the state rules guarantee the taxi driver has passed his tests too.

Minimizing the risk of older drivers is not the motive. The actual motive is "control" and the undermining of the Tenth Amendment. It is all about "bigger government" in all areas. That is a major goal of the HO and his ilk.

It's up to the each state and how they monitor their drivers. Driving in the state is the states business and it's not anything to do with the federal government. Too many tickets and a full driver retest is needed, no matter what your age, condition, alcohol or drugs involved OR that distracted driving problem. Computer driverless cars are helpful for everyone.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Florida has a bunch of the worst drivers anywhere. Age doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.
(Dangerous) drivers of all ages should be tested every two years. Maybe this way, if they can't pass the driving test, they'll get them pulled off of the road. Of course, they should tighten up the requirements too.

We know how this will play out. Government funding will be withheld until all states and territories agree to the same standards. This was used to get seatbelt laws and the 55 MPH speed limits.
