GM deal with OnStar, RelayRides lets car owners rent their vehicles out

GasBuddy Blog -- GM announced a new service it is providing for customers buying new Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC vehicles. The service, which is an arrangement between GM, OnStar, and RelayRides, a Boston-based car-sharing company, gives owners the chance to make "hundreds of dollars a month."

Whether or not allowing your vehicle to be rented by strangers is a smart choice is something consumers will have to decide for themselves, but for now, the folks at Hertz, Enterprise and Avis can't be too happy... The new GM deal is estimated to add 6 million vehicles to the pool of available rental vehicles.

And while 'car-sharing' via options like ZipCars is gaining interest in metro areas like New York and Boston Car-sharing; ZipCars...

If you want to rent a vehicle, go to the 'rent a vehicle' place! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012

Just a couple of problems, your finance company will not be happy if you rent the car they hold a loan on to some one they don't know and call the loan under the terms of the contract. And what about your insurance company that insure only your family, they may say oops no more insurance for you. Most states require the owner of the vehicle have primary liability insurance. Some things that look easy and profitable are not so easy and certianly not profitable.

The liability issues are breathtaking. What will your insurance company say about your car being driven by unknown people? They get into an accident that hurts people or worse. You think the lawsuits will only be against the driver and Relay Rides? They've thought of all that? I wouldn't bet my house and livelihood on it.
